  • "Works on Paper" by Werner Drewes

    October 29, 2024 - November 30, 2024
    Triangle Art Studios, 7711 Old Georgetown Rd, Bethesda, MD 20814, USA

     "Works on Paper by Werner Drewes," curated by Drewes Fine Art
    October 29 - November 30
    Open Tuesdays - Fridays, 11AM-7PM; Saturdays, 11AM-8PM; and Sundays, 11AM-6PM
    Opening Reception: Saturday, November 2, 5-8pm

    After studying at the Bauhaus in Germany, Werner Drewes (1899-1985) emigrated to New York in 1930. He was one of the first artists to bring the creative principles of non-objective art to America. He was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists Group and one of the first to exhibit abstract art at the Guggenheim and MOMA. He encouraged a new genre of artists in New York City through Hayter’s Atelier 17 workshops, as a WPA Graphics program director, and as a professor at Columbia University. Later, he continued his teaching career at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, before returning to the east coast, where he spent his final years in Reston, Virginia. He continued to create, show, and teach, until his death in 1985.

    This show will embrace works spanning his Bauhaus studies to his retirement years where he continued to “play with shape, form and color” in the creations of stunning abstract collages. No Drewes show would be complete without an assemblage of his multi-plate, textured woodcuts. This show will also include pastels and watercolors never exhibited. We are proud to share this art with you, from one of our most formidable American Abstract Artists.

    Come to our special presentation on the Atelier 17 Project. Ann Shafer, independent curator and past curator of the Baltimore Art Museum, will be discussing the exciting plans for celebrating the 100th year of the Atelier 17 Project, a major printing movement brought to the U.S. from France during the 1940s. The event will take place Saturday, November 9 from 4-6pm.

    For further questions or to arrange a private showing, collage, or print workshop, contact: Karen E. D. Seibert at 301.346.9033, karen@seibertgroup.com.

In 1974 rural Olney was considered to be out in the country, with many active farms. Five people with a passion for creating original artwork started talking to each other about art. They didn’t have much formal art training. Meeting in each other’s homes they shared ideas about art and started inviting local artists to participate and demonstrate art techniques. Over time Olney Art Association evolved as an organization. Art shows were planned and the public was invited and more people wanted to join to grow and share their creativity and love of art. With 70 member artists, the Association is now considered to be one of the premier art groups in the DMV. Enjoy additional exhibits “The Blues” with Resident Artists in the Gallery Hall, a mini-solo with Mark McAlister in the Lounge Gallery, a Pop-Up Shop with Colleen Darkow, along with nineteen Gallery 209 Member Artists exhibiting their latest work. • The Future of USCIS Records: The Record Destruction Clock is Ticking

    December 8, 2024  1:30 pm - 3:00 pm
    Virtual via Zoom

     Zoom meeting, free for members of JGSGW. Nonmembers may register to attend for a fee of $5.
    US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) maintains millions of priceless historical documents, some of which can be accessed via the troubled Genealogy Program, while others require FOIA requests, or remain out of reach entirely. Panelists will provide a brief background on some of the record sets; why the documents are vital to knowing 19th and 20th Century US Immigration history; and what lies ahead.
    Panelists will:

    Update participants on advocacy efforts to push USCIS to transfer historical records in its custody to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA);
    Discuss C-Files and the urgency of needing USCIS to change their status from temporary to permanent (destruction date: 2056);
    Discuss P-Files and explain that while their status has changed from temporary to permanent, P-Files are still all but inaccessible; and
    Explain how legislative advocacy is necessary to implement these changes, and how JGSGW members can play an important role in this, given the influence their federal elected officials play in oversight for USCIS (MD-Raskin; MD-Mfume; VA-Connolly) and funding for NARA (MD-Van Hollen; MD-Harris; MD-Hoyer; MD-Ruppersberger VA-Cline; VA-Wexton)

    Participation of genealogists and genealogy societies in advocating for better Federal records management is essential to ensure access to records now and in the future. The future of USCIS-held records remains in jeopardy if the community does not work to protect them.

    This one-hour program, conducted over Zoom at 1:30 PM Eastern Time, is free for members. This is one of the many activities that is a benefit of JGSGW membership. Instructions for joining the online meeting will be placed under Meeting Info & Links in the Members Only Files. (These files become visible on this website after members sign in.) Nonmembers may register to attend for a fee of $5.
